We looked out the window at the fog covering the mountains, and the blanket of clouds covering the earth.
It's raining cats and dogs today, and even the dog won't go out without his raincoat. J-man put a jar out on the steps this morning to see how much rain he can catch.
We watched the drops of water racing down the window, and tried to count the colors of the rainbow in our prism.
We listened to the sound of the rain on the roof and against the window and talked about the sounds we heard outside, like the way the rain sounds coming through the branches, the splat of it hitting the steps and the pavement, and the singing birds dancing in the treetops.
Some of our favorite books for learning about rain:
- Anna Comstock's Handbook of Nature Study
- What Will the Weather Be? (Lets-Read-And-Find-Out Science)
- The Storm Book (Charlotte Zolotow)
- Nature Activities Weather Watcher
- Eric Sloane's Weather Book
- The Handy Weather Answer Book

I like how many things you found to notice about a rainy day. We have lots of those here, so it won't be long before we can try it ourselves. Thanks!
Well done for getting outside when even your dog wouldn't go out! Thanks for linking up to the Outdoor Play Party
I need to incorporate more nature study. It seems like such a natural thing to do, but not for me!! Thanks for the inspiration!
It's kind of funny to read the rainy day post after the sunny day one, and see the before.
I love his illustration of the view from the porch.
Thanks for linking up to Science Sunday!
This looks like the kind of rainy day that would beckon me to stay inside and make stew. But you are a trooper. Great pictures also.
All of those simple but fun and effective activities you incorporated into your rainy day study of nature were great
I love your nature studies! I enjoy the peek at the nature journal.
